The Southtowns Youth Orchestra, founded in 1987 by Ellen Buxton and William Staebell, was created to provide advanced students with a community orchestra where they could regularly engage in high-level musical performance. What started with fewer than 20 members has grown into a vibrant ensemble of over 90 talented musicians. With a diverse and challenging repertoire, the orchestra offers invaluable opportunities for students to grow and advance in their musical careers.
The Southtowns Youth Orchestra is open to students in grades 6 through 12 who have reached a NYSSMA Level 4 or higher. Each week, musicians from across Western New York come together to rehearse, with students traveling from as far south as Fredonia and as far north as Starpoint. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Orchard Park Middle School. Each semester includes approximately 10 rehearsals, running from September to November and January to March.
Auditions for membership include a prepared solo at a NYSSMA Level 4, 5, or 6 (or equivalent), orchestral excerpts, and sight-reading. The Southtowns Youth Orchestra fosters a strong sense of community, providing students with both a challenging and supportive environment where they can develop their skills and share their love of music.
